New theme announced for #NNW 2017 and 2018

From among the nearly 300 submissions from nurses, students and the public, CNA has selected the National Nursing Week theme for 2017 and 2018: #YESThisIsNursing.

Alliah Over, RN, MN, of Newmarket, Ont., wins the $200 contest prize for her suggestion, in the form of a hashtag to stimulate social media discussion and shared pride in the work nurses do. Over is a public health nurse in the Regional Municipality of York’s healthy living division. “Nursing roles are evolving at an exponential rate, particularly with the influence of technology and the expansion of digital technologies,” she says, explaining her inspiration. “We can leverage social media to raise awareness, promote advocacy and connect people across the globe on important issues. For me, this theme speaks to the expanding traditional and non-traditional roles, settings and sectors nurses work in as well as the unique opportunities for our profession presented by social media and emerging tech trends.”

Once the selection was made in early February, CNA began work on creating a poster for National Nursing Week 2017 (May 8‑14). Although CNA will not be printing and selling the poster, it will be available for download at cna-aiic.ca/NationalNursingWeek.

“We’re excited about the theme,” says CNA president Barb Shellian. “It affirms the breadth and depth of the profession and of the contributions nurses make every day. And the fact that it’s social media friendly is a bonus.”

CNA encourages health-care organizations and nursing colleges and associations to show their creativity in incorporating the theme as they plan NNW events and activities and to start using the hashtag on social media.
