Concerns about ADHD drug black-box warnings

Black-box warnings about the potential suicide risk associated with drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are confusing, say researchers at the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal and the University of Montreal in correspondence published in The Lancet Psychiatry. They argue that in issuing these warnings, Health Canada failed to take into account population-level evidence showing that the suicide rate among Quebec teens has decreased as ADHD medication use has increased. The researchers are concerned that the warnings may lead physicians and parents to shy away from these effective medications.
