New molecule may prevent preterm birth

Premature births are linked with inflammation of the uterine tissue, a biological response that induces contractions and labour. In their search for a way to prevent this phenomenon and complications related to deliveries before 37 weeks’ gestation, researchers at CHU Sainte-Justine and University of Montreal discovered a molecule that inhibits inflammation and prevents or delays contractions without adversely affecting the fetus or the mother. This discovery of this molecule, published in The Journal of Immunology, needs to be tested in women with a history of premature delivery.
