Adverse events in hospital: New data on kids

May 2013   Comments

The Canadian Paediatric Adverse Events Study found that 9.2 per cent of children who were admitted to acute care hospitals in 2008 suffered adverse events that led to death, disability, prolonged stay or readmission.

A comparable 2004 study of adults reported an adverse event rate of 7.5 per cent. The incidence of adverse events was significantly higher for children in academic hospitals (11.2 per cent) than in community hospitals (3.3 per cent), probably because of the greater complexity of cases in academic settings.
