A painful transition

Finally, someone recognizes the challenges of transitioning from pediatric care that has been excellent to adult care (Promising Practices, March). The program at SickKids sounds wonderful. I wish there had been one like it for us when it came to referrals. My daughter has Crohn’s disease. Once she outgrew pediatric care, we were expected to find a gastroenterologist on our own. The one we found seemed good at first, but she was hard to reach and offered few treatment options. For many years, my daughter believed her life would only get worse, and she suffered. Fortunately, we found another doctor who was open to trying something different and my daughter’s life changed as a result. She’s now able to do many things and has been much healthier.
